Educating children BIRtH through graduation

What We Offer

UPPER GRADE SCHOOL 5TH-8TH

The upper grade school program, which includes grades fifth through eighth with plans to add a grade each year, is built upon a call and a commitment to academic excellence and fosters the increasing  independence of our students. With small class sizes (12-14) and multi grade learning opportunities we are afforded the ability to provide continuing support, engagement, and challenge within a nurturing environment.

Highly qualified teachers employ a variety of differentiated instructional teaching  strategies to unlock the full potential of each student. The core academic subjects of  language arts, mathematics, science and social studies are complemented and  enhanced  by enrichment classes in art, music/performing arts, literacy support, library, Spanish,  gifted & Talented, STEM and physical education. Additionally, we offer a competitive Destination Imagination team and in the Fall of 2024, introduce a choir program. This wide range of academic and artistic enrichment activities provide rich opportunities for our students to serve, lead, and learn, both at school and in our community. Programs and curriculum are continually evaluated, updated and customized to meet the individual academic and emotional needs of our students. As  students continue to develop, they are offered additional opportunities through  various clubs and organizations including, but not limited to Chess Club, Lego Club, and Student Leadership.

A challenging curriculum invites students to discover the world around them and think critically about it. Our goal is to educate and inspire our upper grade students to lead lives of purpose and transform the world. Students are exposed to a wide variety of experiences that support their intellectual and personal growth and also prepare them for future careers or education with  confidence. We believe that the complete education of a child should inspire their hearts to promote a  peaceful world. We strive to offer a well-balanced, technology-rich, and dynamic educational program that challenges both the  intellect and the imagination in a safe, supportive and  nurturing  environment. Our students become young people of  character who are also critical thinkers, effective  communicators, respectful collaborators, and resilient problem solvers in their learning and their lives. Sherwood  graduates leave us as whole, self-disciplined, ethical beings who are well prepared to pursue, confidently, the next stage in the journey of their lives.

Highly qualified teachers employ a variety of differentiated instructional teaching strategies to unlock the full potential of each student. In addition to a strong academic program, our teachers nurture the development of the whole child and strive to build self-esteem by valuing each child’s unique qualities. It is the goal of every teacher to instill a love for learning and ensure that each child leaves their classroom as a confident, responsible, and successful person, ready to accept the challenges throughout the rest of their scholarly journey. Pre-School Classes- Ages 3 years through 4 years

For children ages three to four (including our five day a week transitional kindergarten program), everything is a learning opportunity. We believe that children learn through experience and discovery. Our goal is to prepare children to enter kindergarten with a healthy self-concept and a positive attitude toward school and learning. This is accomplished by offering a custom age appropriate curriculum designed to develop social, emotional, physical and cognitive abilities in our  students. Since every child is unique, our preschool is designed to allow children to initiate activities that are inspired from personal interest and intentions as well as explore teacher initiated activities. Through exploration our preschool students interact with materials, people, ideas and events. Preschool teachers encourage  active learning by providing resources, planning experiences and creating an inviting environment in which all children can learn and prepare for a lifetime of learning and success. Our class sizes are small and led by qualified, experienced, and nurturing teachers who share a passion for teaching young children.  In addition to their daily classroom activities, provided enrichment classes include music and movement, library, Spanish, and outdoor multi-sensory exploration.  Our four year old students also visit the STEM lab.

Areas of curriculum focus include fine motor development, phonological awareness,  numeric awareness, social development, active exploration, spatial awareness, community awareness, vocabulary building, music and art awareness, STEM, and an introduction to Spanish.
